Immolation

This afternoon, an idea that was born in pique took root in deeper soil. I thought of those Vietnamese monks who burned themselves. Immolation.

I'm a gifted writer, I think, but what difference does that make in this Bush-addled world? Why say anything at all when the Stupids are in charge? (My contempt, really a kind of fear, for people of average or lower intelligence cannot be concealed.)

What if I were to plant myself in the lobby of this very busy building and drink a tumbler of bleach? It would be an awful death, hideously painful, but I would have announced my protest in advance. I would, as a child of Catholic teaching, "offer it up." To you. Stop watching television.

I'd want to be very sure that there was nothing that anyone could do to save me.

First of all, as a child of Catholic teaching myself, self-immolation (or some similarly self-induced demise) is, as I recall, not valid, as far as the Church is concerned--it only counts if someone else physically forces one to self-immolate (or otherwise). Secondly, as someone who considers themself a friend of yours, not to mention a faithful reader of your blog, I would certainly not want to see you drink bleach or do anything else life-threatening. Finally, I am not nearly as frightened about those of average or lower intelligence, because I know some people who, in general, I would consider of an extremely high level of intelligence who still (albeit with minor quibbles) believe the administration is on the right track. This, to me, is really scary.

Scary indeed no matter what level of intellectual function but then even those of high function are known to do odd things from time to time, eh. Burning and bleach are not to be considered.

My dear man, I read you nearly every morning, and although we all feel this way from time to time, I implore you to dispense with thoughts of fire or bleach. I can't speak for fire, but I have met someone who tried the latter. Unsuccessfully. It is not a method to be contemplated. Trust me.

Plus, I adore reading you. PS I too one-clicked Andrew O'Hagan's newest.

May I suggest to you, if you don't know it, Alison Bechdel's FUN HOME. I haven't read you for all that long of course so you may have already found her before she got to paperback.
