Wonderful review. Did you see Broadway Danny Rose for the first time just recently? It is, without a doubt, my favourite Woody Allen movie. You description of the end of the movie gave me chills, because it cut me to core the first time I saw it (yes, I actually cried in a Woody Allen movie). I still get choked up every time I watch it. And the music is so delightful. Every now and then my husband and I will get silly and squeal at each other in little squeaky voice, "I'm just a beard! I'm just a beard!"

You are right. His best movies are without a doubt with Mia Farrow. 'Hannah And Her Sisters' is another beautiful work of art. I think he was able to explore ideas and relationships in a much deeper and more sensitve way with Mia than at any other time in his career. She brought something out of him that was gentle, thoughtful and bittersweet. Biggest mistake of his life, messing up that marriage.

Initially I found it very difficult to enjoy Allen's work after that nightmare with his stepdauther now wife. It still makes me cringe. But I have learned to separate the artist from the art, as I do with many other books and movies and paintings once I find out about the life of the creator. You cannot judge a person by what they create; that is just one part of a very complicated messy puzzle. Just like you cannot judge a person by their blog, either.

I'm always reminded of what Margaret Atwood wrote in the book 'Negotiating With The Dead: A Writer On Writing' :
"There's an epigram tacked to my office bulletin board, pinched from a magazine – "Wanting to meet an author because you like his work is like wanting to meet a duck because you like the pate." "

Sorry for the very long post. You hit a nerve.
