Loose Links: Week of 3 October

¶ The Mozart Effect: Does Mozart make you smarter? The argument continues. Here's an interesting update by Dave Munger at Cognitive Daily.

¶ Oh no! The International Male Catalog, home of unbespeakable outfits for - well a certain market niche - may go out of business.

For almost 30 years a curious clothing catalog has sold ruffled pirate shirts, pink sleeveless suits, and sequined black capes to a seemingly invisible public. What’s it like to go through life in a mesh top? Andrew Goldman treks from the stands at Yankee Stadium to the banquettes at the Four Seasons to investigate life as the ultimate fashion victim.

Straight male Andrew Goldman looks into the matter, but I'm not sure that he finds out. From Radar. Prepare to snigger.

Not Safe For Work: The trailer to an animated movie, dont je ne sais rien, about puberty. It reminds me - did anybody else ever see this? - of Tarzoon, Shame of the Jungle, a film that the St Joseph County sheriff yanked from a theatre in 1978. My word! It's available on VHS!

Thanks for the International Male link. It was indeed quite snigger-worthy.

Back in the early 90's, I found it trendy in the homes of numerous gay men I know to keep International male catalogs close at hand by the loo. I found them hilariously entertaining and lingered way too long in there on more than one occassion as a result. I'm sure that wasn't really the intent of leaving them in there but that was the effect upon me.

In the mid 90's, the ex ex's good friend had a husband in the catalog business. He had been working for a number of years for several yuppie clothing type catalogs like Bean and Crew. He and his wife lived in San Diego and the ex and I would visit on occassion. One day they announced they were moving back to New York since the hubby had a new job there. We happened to travel to California shortly thereafter and they took us out to dinner. As the hubby drove to the restaurant, we sat in the back seat of their car making small talk. I asked him what company he had taken a job with in New York. He replied "International Male".

God help me, I burst out laughing, though I quickly realized no one else was laughing with me. I'm not talking a chuckle here, I'm talking an uncontrollable "Bwa HA HA HA" sort of outburst. I was forced to quickly gather myself and make some excuse about the laughter when they did not seem to see the humor in it. I was wondering - had they never SEEN the catalog? Since he was straight, with little to no gay sensibility that I could detect, I just couldn't imagine how he had decided to take that job. I was forced to clamp down on uncontrollable tittering for the rest of the evening which I think eventually resulted in a severe case of indigestion.

I don't know how long he worked there or where he eventually ended up but I somehow doubt he landed there for all that long.

I always thought they could consider retooling their audience to a renaissance faire, romance novel, bodice ripping type crowd and the sensibility would not be far off.
