Loose Links: Week of 24 October
¶ Took all the way to Friday to find something fun: Drag queen Shirley Q. Liquor sings along with the old Winston Cigarette commercial. A prime memory. Teachers across the land railed so vehemently against the misuse of "like" in the cigarette's jingle - "Winstons taste good, like a cigarette should" - planted a lifelong mistrust of the shape-shifting word, and I usually write my way around it.

Loose Links: Week of 17 October
¶ Lots of kids are taking sleeping pills. Lots of adults, too. Too bad the damn things don't work. I did take a sleeping pill once that worked. It worked beautifully! Unfortunately, Quaalude turned out to have a recreational use that I, voracious consumer of forbidden substances, could never understand.
¶ This smells like a hoax to me. World's oldest noodles uncovered in Yellow River silt. (Thanks to kottke.org.)
¶ somehow this sounds a lot more appealing than cremation: promession. A/K/A freeze-drying.
¶ This "all-in-one" computer media center looks great, and I hope that it becomes standard, but two a desktop and two laptops in a row made a determined no-Sony purchaser out of me.

¶ If you're in the mood for a college-style grossout, visit Jason Mulgrew's Everything Is Wrong With Me, where repulsive but funny nicknames are dusted off for a good laugh. I could hardly believe the tales of dissolution; the modern college is a sewer! But it was nice to know that "A fungus among us" is still current. Or was it?

¶ Not Safe For Work: The trailer to an animated movie, dont je ne sais rien, about puberty. It reminds me - did anybody else ever see this? - of Tarzoon, Shame of the Jungle, a film that the St Joseph County sheriff yanked from a theatre in 1978. My word! It's available on VHS!
